Purpose of the North Carolina Graduation Project

Strawberries

According to the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the “North Carolina Graduation Project is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary performance assessment completed over time. The NC Graduation Project provides students the opportunity to connect content knowledge, acquired skills, and work habits to real world situations and issues. Through the graduation project process, students will engage various specific skills that include: computer knowledge, employability skills, information-retrieval skills, language skills – reading, language skills – writing, teamwork, and thinking/problem-solving skills. The NC Graduation Project consisting of four components (a research paper, product, portfolio, and an oral presentation) culminates in a student’s final year of high school. Students engagement in the graduation project process and the completion of the graduation project demonstrates the integration of knowledge, skills, and performance.”

Four Program Components

1. Write a research paper-a student driven paper demonstrating the student's ability to access, sort, select and validate information, and incorporate it in research paper centered around a student chosen research topic and focused thesis.
2. Design and develop a project-(related to the paper) showcasing the application of knowledge, personal and interpersonal skills and core skills-reading, writing, thinking, speaking, presenting, problem solving as well as live skills time management etc.
3. Compile a portfolio- demonstrating and validating the student's Senior Project learning journey. (Before hearing each student speak, the judges will preview the student's Senior Project Project Portfolio.)
4. Deliver a related formal demonstrating oral communications skills. (The speech is presented to a board of judges selected from the faculty, community members, classified staff and administration who have some background in the students' area of study.)
